Are topsites useful?

Do you use topsites? Do you find them helpful in getting traffic? If so, how?

I've used them before when my forum was only less than a year old but, it didn't really help. I guess I didn't give it a fair try at it... could try again sometime though.

I find anything you can use for a tool of advertising you take advantage of because everywhere you go where your forum hasn't been marked for advertisement is a loss of chance of that traffic you could have gotten.

I'm a iffy on it. I don't like them i think it takes away from actually getting to your forum. but they can do great things for a site that is well categorized.
