In my private life I tend to be a little shy around new people until I get to know them better. In my professional life I am quite the opposite. I need to be very assertive and aggressive.

I say it's wiser to say nothing when one has nothing of value to say lest he say something foolish and embarrass themselves by it. I feel the problem is people have grown so used to constantly talking that no one can see the wisdom in not speaking. I find it helps to be more observant when you aren't focused on talking and can spot things that can point things out about people that will help in knowing who you should hang around and who you shouldn't. It's not to say there is something wrong with talking but it has its place and should stay where it belongs and not be something you do everywhere when the situation simply doesn't call for one to speak.

I am definitely shy around new people and don't care much for talking if I can avoid it.
