For those of you from other countries, ask any questions you have regarding New Zealand and a Kiwi (New Zealander) will be sure to answer your question! (Hopefully)

Why are you called kiwi's? That does not sound like New Zealand

The Kiwi is the flightless but native bird of New Zealand. We are called Kiwi's for that reason.

What does a bird have to do with the people?

We have plenty of things native to this country here but we do not call ourselves those things.

Is there a lot of sheep in New Zealand?

Just like the South Africans are called the Springboks and the Australians are called Wallabies.

New Zealand has the highest density of sheep per capita (sheep outnumber the human population 12 to 1)

So you probable see them in pastures/fields while driving out in the country (like we see cows here).

You're more likely to see them in hilly terrain. Cows are most likely to be found on flatter pastures.

Oh I always thought it was because of the fruit.

Here, the fruit is called 'Kiwifruit'. I know elsewhere they are just referred to as 'Kiwi's'.

That depends on what you're interested in.

And yes I have heard of the flight of the conchords. Do I like them? No.

If I say I'm going to eat a Kiwi, how do you know that I'm not talking about the bird or eating a New Zealander? What if I want to eat all 3 at the same time?

You'll be eating a fruit. Kiwi birds are a protected species and cannot be consumed by humans. And unless you're a cannibal, you have to be eating the fruit.

I never knew that the term Kiwis is used to mean New Zealand-ers till I told my friend I wanted to backpack in New Zealand and work in a Kiwi (I didn't use the term Kiwifruit because yes, the fruit is known as Kiwi to where I'm from) farm to earn some money. He went 0.0

I'm really interested in going to New Zealand to go my Masters degree. Not sure where though.
