Banned For Outside Actions?

Do you think it is right for an administrator to ban one of his members after seeing him do something wrong on another forum? For example, he got banned because he continuously spammed members with a website link. I've seen this happen a multiple of times and I want to know your take on it.
 
The only way I would agree with disciplining a member for actions he took outside of your site would be if they reflected badly on your site, such as spamming a place with links to your site. Other than that, keep your mouth closed and let the other place's admin team deal with him themselves and stay out of it.
 
I agree, and it surprises me how popular this is, I believe in fresh starts, so let's say someone spams up someones forum and legitimately feels bad and once to start a new, it'd be wrong for you to dig up something he did elsewhere.
 
I wouldn't ban a member for actions on another site no. I have fired staff for this as it's a bad reflection on my site, I don't want my forum to have a tarnished reputation.
 
I think what's done on one forum should stay there.
 
It wouldn't make sense to ban someone who hasn't broken the rules. Whatever they did elsewhere is someone elses problem. If they come to your forum and start breaking rules / spamming then they can banned. Until then they havent done anything wrong.
 
I don't exactly believe in punishing people for what they do elsewhere but I do think it wouldn't be unexpected of someone to look at you differently especially when you start displaying the signs that you are going to bring over what you did elsewhere to your own board. It's just being cautious which is what anyone should do if they run a board. People don't magically change their ways from board to board. lol

Strongly disagree with this statement. Before making such a statement have you ever considered the way a member was treated on one board verses another board? If a person was mistreated on one board does that guarantee that when they move on they will act the same when treated fairly? I doubt the answer would be yes but feel free to convince me otherwise.
 
Well there is one particular forum i was banned on for a stupid reason, some of you may know. But that doesn't affect my behaviour on any other forums.
 
I suppose if you hang around the ZB network enough then you will see my point of view with all the crap that goes on in that network. I don't really know anyone outside of that network so I have nothing to make a judgement on. It's not like I would act on it till I actually see the troublesome behavior for myself. It would just be in the back of my mind.

I thought ZetaBoards was the most inactive forum network on the internet? Could you give me any links to big ZetaBoards powered forums?
 
I don't think I've seen actual members get banned for outside actions, but I have seen staff be fired.

Aha there is a lot of crap that goes on in the ZB network...but (going back to your first post) there are some people that change from forum to forum...but I'm not naming names.

Agreed. I have actually made a point on my forum to the regular members that we shouldn't be pointing fingers at a given person because of something he's done on another forum. As long as he doesn't break any rules on my forum, he's welcome to stay. I think it's actually written in our rules if I remember right.

I agree. The way a member is treated reflects on how they will behave. If someone is treated poorly then they wont be a great member. Before their departure they may be a troll and angry at everyone.. If they go to another forum where they are treated fairly then they will probably be a more positive type of person on that forum.
 
I treat my members as I find them and what they may or may not have done on another forum is irrelevant to me.
 
I've done it before, once or twice. Their behavior has been such that it wouldn't be beneficial in any way, shape or form to have them actively contribute to sites that I work on, and the admins involved have agreed.
 
I can literally count on one hand the forums I am on.



I'm not all that active on any of them, but if staff gets into the habit of flaming users, I tend to begin to avoid them. And, as in the case of a pay board that I joined just to see what it was like, when my membership lapses, as it should this month, I won't be back. Ever.



Do I think that a user should be banned for something done on another forum? Depends.



If it was criminal, such as fraud or making threats of physical real world violence against another. Yes.



For getting in an argument as to whether or not Mr. Obama is the Anti-Christ? No.
 
I've been banned for outside actions twice, one time for advertising the same forum on my forum without the owners permission. (Guess he doesn't like free advertising :/)



Another time I was banned because I made a forum similar to the forum I was banned on. ( The person was in a bad mood and everything got resolved.)
