I really do like Ian McKellen, but I don't know if I think he was the best part of the Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit series. I think he's the best thing of the X-Men series as Magneto though! I think it depends on what film you are looking at. I feel like the best part of The Two Towers was Smeagle. As for The Hobbit franchise as a whole, in the second film, I liked Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, and in the whole series, I liked Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins.Smaug said:Ian McKellen is the best thing to ever happen to those movies.
