Criminalization of Holocaust denial

If someone gets offended by something in Europe, it will be illegal there sooner or later.

That's usually how ALL laws start everywhere, including USA.

Usually a group of people don't like the way something is, or thinks it is wrong in the current way.

Well this debate is silly. Ive honestly never even heard anyone even talk about the Holocaust where I live.

Then what's the big deal with this law? Sounds like it won't affect anyone anyways.

It's a big deal because you're punishing people for what they think.

I can't go along with that.

Well, people can say whatever they want, no matter how offensive it may be.

Our jails are crowed enough. No need to put people away for such pettiness. This why local cops around here ignore a lot of crimes or just write out tickets, because it costs too much to take the time and effort to book people for insignificant crimes.

You mean like the kids on court trial for rapping out an order?

You could just charge them for disturbing the peace I suppose if they made a big deal of it in some public place.. I just want to know how any sane person could think that..

You can't say whatever you want....it is against the law to go into a crowded theatre and shout FIRE

But, I know what Nebulous means, you shouldn't go around arresting people for saying stupid things--There was no holocaust, the earth is flat, Jesus was just another man, Barack O'bama is Satan....

It's too politically correct.

Freedom of Speech has the limits.

You can not specifically target a person nor can you start a riot.

Defualt example of number 1: Guys lets go kill the person in that room.

Default example of number 2: What Princess said shouting FIRE in a movie theater.

@skillet thanks

What is saying something like this caused a reverse-riot? So many people were upset about that persons thoughts, they caused a riot against them? Or against the government to pressure them to change the law?

That wouldn't work.

IF you said hey jews suck and the holocaust was fake nothing would be done. Nothing COULD be done, at least not in the USA.

If you said hey jews suck and they are liars so WE should go kill them...then thats illegal.

If you said jews suck and the holocaust was a fake and then someone attacks you, you could sue them.

I know, America isnt the best

Like those crazy roman catholic christians that are like hardcore. Go around SCHOOLS with signs like Jews are mistakes, Fags are gods enemies, God hates fags, fags should die...it's not illegal.

If you are saying the holocaust is fake, isn't that the same as saying the Jewish people are lying?

Actually, some of those signs can be illegal. If it infringes enough upon the other persons rights, it will be deemed illegal. Right to integrity?

1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.

If something can be justified, even if it infringes upon your rights to freedom of expression, and can be justified, it will be legal discrimination to you.

Yes but in the United States those two lawas apply to freedom of speech.

Here in the United States, you may lie.

To simply get out of a law suit or legal punishment say you lied.

I liked because i thought it was funny... Emotional distress is no issue in this case.

Some people are kinda crazy over this Holocaust. there was an elementary teacher who taught his students for years (and got away with it for the longest time) that the Holocaust was right! that's just creepy... I think he went to jail for it though...

I already mentioned this, as you're probably thinking of the same case as me Dennise. It's not against the law, you just can't teach it. He didn't go to jail, just lost his job.

And by the way; in the state of Michigan, you CAN be busted for saying n-word or kike or porch monkey or any other derogatory name to call a certain race.

Really? Lol.. I know people who say those sorts of words and mean them in a harmless way and say them to their own race... When they arrest people to they try to investigate the context in which it was used?

With the first link, the chain is forged. The first speech censored, the first thought forbidden, the first freedom denied, chains us all irrevocably. -- Captain Picard, quoting Judge Aaron Satie (The Drumhead)

That's why people don't like it and are making a big deal of it. One of my favorite quotes from Star Trek and the perfect argument against censorship IMO.

There is already restrictions, though. This isn't the same world we were living in 80 years ago. Some words can and are banned in countries. I can't just go in a kindergarten class and teach profanities, as much as some people can't use racial references when talking to some people. Do you have a problem not saying the n word? Chances are no. Do you have a problem not yelling profanities in public? Chances are yes. This should be commonsense already, so I don't see why adding a rule to back it up is really too hard to imagine.

If you give people an inch then they will take a mile and ask if you won't mind giving up a few more?

Before you know it, you will live in a world where disagreeing with authority gets you jailed or killed because the people in power will keep slowly stretching any law made so it does much more then you ever planned on it doing.

Good example of this is laws that are about your money/tax dollars or laws regarding the restriction of your rights.
