Being in the medical field, I would say the answer is Leukocytes. The Leukocytes leave the bone marrow ( [font=tahoma, helvetica, arial, sans-serif]A stand of sturdy, stony walls) and enters the blood stream ([font=tahoma, helvetica, arial, sans-serif]Yet soon I sail a salty tide) to fight infection ([font=tahoma, helvetica, arial, sans-serif]To help my host when harm befalls.)

These three lines make me think of a contest. Then Hard each word make me think of spelling.
