What do you consider a dead topic? When is a topic considered dead?

I've come across a few forums that lock topics whenever you reply to them IF they are dead, according to staff. But, how is it dead if it is still relevant to your reply that furthers the discussion? I do not believe a thread should not recieve attention after so long just because people stop talking about it, because the same topics and discussion will arise time and time again, and the best way to keep from multiple topics about the same material is to let others reply to dead topics, as long as it is worthy of discussion.

There is nothing wrong with bumping up old discussion topics in my opinion. If someone has something to add to the convo, let them add it!

Say if someone replies to a very old topic like 'We reached 5,000 posts! to say their congratulations

... and the forum now has 100,000 posts, then yeah.. That shouldnt be replied to.

I don't have a problem with bumping.. if I didn't want someone to post in a topic, I'd either lock it, or move it to the trash can.. old stats announcements, etc.. are topics I sometimes leave open because usually, my members know that once we have made well past the milestone, the know not to reply.. but the only time I have a problem with someone bumping old threads like that are those on a post exchange or package.. there is no reason for you to be bumping the intro of someone who has either been banned, or has joined before you. I don't do this on their boards, and I expect the same courtesy. I don't mind if some of them members bumped the topic reflecting on how far we have come.. that is fine, but if we have like 23K posts, why would you bump the one announcing 1K.. with a response of congratulations.. here is to many more?

And it reflects poorly on the staff of an advertising forum to do this especially when you have requested their services. If you are going to offer a service, then I think that, free or not, a certain level of professionalism should be expected.

Unless the topic is time dated such as a birthday topic or a congrats on a post count achievement then I say let them if it adds to the topic.

I don't get why some board owners insist on members recreate the same topics over and over again because they won't allow bumping of a topic if the post bumping it is relevant.

I place every announcement that reaches page 2 of announcements in the mod achieve aka trash.

Finished battles get:

A. Finished battle.

B. Neverending battle.

I never lock topics on my forum. I figure, heck, if people want to reply to them so badly, let them for crying out loud! I hate going on forums where if you bump up a topic and they lock it, and then you automatically get a warning for it. The only topics I don't mind that are locked, is if you wish happy birthday to a member, and it gets to be a month after their birthday, then no one can reply, because it's a month old. Those topics I don't mind locking, or I don't mind others locking either.

I think many board owners close topics prematurely to begin with, and I cant be a board owner who closes a topic because it's old. New things can be discussed within the topic. However, I would close the topic once its reached a fair amount of pages and ask them to create a second version of it just so other members can play catch-up. I just hate endless pages.

This topic was posted in 2009. Is it a dead topic?

Well I am bumping it now.

There's no such thing as a dead topic. Just topics that have been lost in the ocean of others. If someone has something worth contributing to it, then by all means go ahead and bring it back up to the surface for some air.

A couple of forums I go on have the rule that threads can't be bumped if they are a certain age - about 3 months. Why? Seriously, what problem does it cause? If you've got something to say then you should be able to say it no matter how old previous discussions are.
