Ever vomit a lot or wake up feeling like you swallowed a razor and than still go to work and fight it through the day?

Well, thats me today. I felt great yesterday. Woke up vomiting and having diarrhea at like 4 or 5 am this morning. I don't take many days off. But I'm thinking If I don't get better yet. Probably have to go home. I'm not feeling myself today. Flu has been going around. I think I might have it.

If I felt like you do, there is no way I would have gone into work. I'm sorry you're feeling ill and I hope you go home and get some rest.

To answer the OP question: I have gone to work not feeling well BUT it was always something that no one else could catch. For example when my allergies flare up and I have a headache and/or stuffy nose.

Yes. I work two jobs that do not come with benefits or paid sick time, so when I call out sick, I get marked for it and I don't get paid. This is what sucks about working for corporate America. You get screwed over when you're sick and then you come to work worried you'll be punished for it if you call out to take care of yourself, and then you end up getting other people sick.

Yeah, no shit. And it's hard finding one that'll pay me enough to cover my bills, receive some sort of benefits, and not drive me up the wall insane. I'm looking, but they're not out there unless I'm willing to put myself into immense debt to get yet another piece of paper that says I'm qualified to work in a job market that doesn't offer any real jobs.

Today I get to work and hear that half the staff have phoned in sick.......really pissed me off. It's not as if I have a runny nose I feel awful, yet they get a cold overnight and feel that its fine to not bother whereas I turn up as to not let THEM down.

At least the bosses appreciate it.

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. You're a good employee to show up feeling the way you do. I wanted to ask if you get paid sick time?

Yeah I do.

Everywhere I've worked I always tend to feel part of a team and then think i'll let people down if I ring in sick, especially when working for smaller companies. Though I find this mindset to be quite rare among any colleagues I work with, it seems to just be me.

I have a pretty good reputation at work for having great attendance, it usually comes up in my yearly evaluations as one of my strong points. I rarely use a sick day and I'd have to be feeling really really sick to use one.

Yeah, also if I had a signed doctor's note. It seemed when I was sick, I got punished for it career wise. They still wrote me up when I worked at Wal-Mart.

The message was, we don't care if you're sick and they didn't say that. But still that was they were implying.

An assistant manager told me. " Those damn doctors aren't going to help you."

It was do the job any way. Or so it seemed. It just made me wish having a manager that was understanding. But I didn't get that at Wal-Mart. I had to watch what I did. Its like they had everyone walking on egg shells where I worked. Being sick was not a good thing, they made it a bad thing. So if you're sick. Great, you get marked up for it.

I feel that is bad advertising for corporate business. Your employees are also your customers. Shouldn't they at least put on a show that they care about people's health rather than doing disciplinary action against people who get hurt or are really sick with flu or food poisoning rather than come in and be asked to leave and still get marked for it?

I got sent home many times when I was sick and I still got wrote up for it. I mean, wth?

Fortunately, my managers are all super nice people and would do just about anything they could to help me. When my mom had to go into surgery the last time a few weeks ago, I called out to tell them I had to be there to take her to the hospital and they didn't mark me for it. They know she's been having issues via me telling them and her coming into the store every now and then to shop. But those instances are different, few and far between. When it comes to me, I don't take care of myself. I have responsibilities and when I'm schedule to be somewhere, I'm going to be there. Although we have a point system, I try not to rack them up for cases like that emergency surgery or other accidents that are out of my hands. And unless I'm throwing up or can't walk, something like that, I will not call out of work.

That is ridiculous, Raven.  If you are genuinely sick and it's obvious you might keel over, there's got to be some sort of protocol set up to follow.  That just goes to show how so many people in this country are considered to be nothing but replaceable, droning worker bees.  I mean, I know it could be a lot worse, but for a country that claims to be the greatest one on the planet, we sure as hell are kidding ourselves.

perhaps you have a point... in america at least, "the greatest country in the world" but the nation's worker bees have to work while sick because they can't afford too, unhealthy and sad at the same time... and if you do miss days due to sick and/or injury, there's that possibility that you'd get fired... just like in school, if you miss too many days you'll fail, even if you were truelove sick for those days...

Australia: Where it's illegal for your employer to not provide sick leave (unless you're casual), fire you for being sick, or even question you about being sick at all if you called in sounding like you're about ot leave for a fishing trip. (The MOST they can do is ask for a doctors certificate, which doesn't outline the ailment at all. Even that request has conditions.)

There's a lot wrong with this country, but I guess this isn't on the list (our gun laws also don't make that list, nor does Medicare - providing the Abbott government don't fuck it up.)

That's how my job works too, they can offer extended (usually unpaid if you've used up all earned sick / vacation days) leave of absence for like a year but sooner or later they're going to give your job away if you don't come back.
