First Amendment suspended in the Gulf of Mexico

As CNN is now reporting, the U.S. government has issued a new rule that would make it a felony crime for any journalist, reporter, blogger or photographer to approach any oil cleanup operation, equipment or vessel in the Gulf of Mexico. Anyone caught is subject to arrest, a $40,000 fine and prosecution for a federal felony crime.

It's just the latest tactic from a government that no longer even recognizes the U.S. Constitution or its Bill of Rights. Because the very first right is Freedom of Speech, which absolutely includes the right to walk onto a public beach and take photographs of something happening out in the open, on public waters. It is one of the most basic rights of our citizens and our press.

But now the Obama administration has stripped away those rights, transforming journalists into criminals. Now, we might expect something like this from Chavez, or Castro or even the communist leaders of China, but here in the United States, we've all been promised we lived in the land of the free. Obama apparently does not subscribe to that philosophy anymore (if he ever did).

So how does criminalizing journalists equate to land of the free? It doesn't, obviously. Forget freedom. (Your government already has.) This is about controlling your mind to make sure you don't visually see the truth of what the oil industry has done to your oceans, your shorelines and your beaches. This is all about keeping you ignorant with a total media blackout of the real story of what's happening in the Gulf.

Without the light of media scrutiny, corporations and government will get away with unimaginable crimes against both humanity and nature. That's what's happening right now in the Gulf of Mexico: A crime against nature.

Obama doesn't want you to see that crime. He's covering it up to the benefit of BP. He's keeping you in the dark by threatening reporters and photographers with arrest. How's that for total transparency?

The only thing transparent here is that President Barack Obama has violated his own oath of office by refusing to defend the Constitution. By any honest measure, in fact, these actions, which are endorsed by the White House, stand in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution. And that means this new censorship rule in the Gulf, which suspends the First Amendment, is unconstitutional. It also means those who decided on this rule are enemies of freedom.

They are the ones who should be arrested and hauled off to federal prison, not the CNN reporters who are trying to cover this story.

I am sickened.

Hey scout. Where you been?

Anyway, the govt is allowed to ban media / paparazzi if they are going to get in the way I suppose.

A] They shouldn't ban anyone from somewhere unless they're in the way.

B] Reporters can make things a lot worse too.

C] Haven't we all seen the pics anyway?

Private property > constitution, I guess...

It isn't about the reporters getting in the way. It's about government control. The government has violated the Constitution and they don't care. It's clear that they are deliberately hiding this from us for no good reason at all. And if we keep allowing this nonsense, the Constitution will more than likely be completely eradicated within the next decade or so.

At least, that's my take on it.

Perhaps, but why would they hide something everybody's already seen? That doesn't make sense...

Freedom of speech is a myth anyway.

Maybe there is more to this then we know? It honestly doesn't make sense that he would do something like this. I mean, yeah. I get that reporters can get in the way. But to go to this level? Something don't seem right.

Maybe there is more to this then we know?[/quote]Aliens. There everywhere.

I personally would like to see a link to this article in fact I don't see why anyone should be posting anything in this forum as far as threads go without a link back to the source.

A secondary source with links back to the original stories can be found here. My personal opinion is that they are trying to capitalize on the American public's short attention span to let this thing blow over due to lack of coverage like they do every time something bad happens.

That's absolutely ridiculous. I can kinda understand the thing with the press, but they are trying to keep the lawmakers from getting out there to see what is going on as well?

BP is simply just tired of all the bad image they're getting. They just want to be left alone without people suing them from corner to corner.

Lol. Darn Aliens!

I think it's so less media attention is focused on it and the company can focus on actually cleaning up. Sometimes the media become a hassle because you have to deal with them rather than the problem.

That's a sh*tty excuse, pardon my french. But, honestly, this is the first time in U.S. history (as far as I'm concerned) that any amendment has ever been suspended. There have been many other oil spills in the past, some nearly as bad, and it was never taken to this level.

No offence, but it seems like a lot of you are taking this too lightly. The press is one of our rights in this country. We have allowed Obama the power to suspend the amendment in the Gulf, and this is just as bad as allowing him to remove the amendment altogether.

Either he is taking it too lightly or you are overreacting?

Just thought I'd throw that out there............

So you'd be perfectly okay with the government taking away our right to free speech?
