Fizzy drinks tax needed - doctors

The hilarious thing is that they actually want to put people out of work. They want to close down fast food and takeaway restaurants if they're within x distance of a school, as well as limit the number of fast food/takeout places that are on highstreets. It's fucking moronic that they deem destroying the life of the honest working man important, just because some children are fat.

I'm fine with them limiting cigarettes as they're harmful to the people around you, as well as yourself. Similarly, seatbelts and helmets are very useful inventions. If I didn't wear a helmet I'd have probably died last year after being cut off by a drunk driver and coming off my bike.

Perhaps if people unplugged themselves from their electronic toys and got some damn exercise, it would help. Also if they made healthier food more affordable, more people could eat it. It's all about choice and whether you choose to sit in front of a computer or game console all day chugging fizzy drinks then don't complain when you become fat. Get OUTSIDE, get MOVING and eat HEALTHY. Unfortunately, that's easier said than done. Parents are just as lazy and would rather grab some fast food to bring home for dinner. Shame on them!

Wouldn't it be great if they used the money gained by taxing these drinks to subsidise healthier foods?

In one word.....YES!

Taxing companies for sugar and stuff is a cop-out, people need to be responsible for themselves and increasing the price of a soft drink won’t make a bit of difference.

Really want to have an impact?

Tax the overweight person.

Once per year the person gets a free medical check, their weight is recorded and measured against the body fat index for age/height & gender then give a 10lb allowance. After that you are taxed $5.00 for every lbs that you are overweight…

Now that would be incentive for people to get into shape.

What a great idea!

Excuse my language, but fuck that. That's some dictator level crap right there.

I have to agree with Sci on that. Even if it excludes people with genuine medical problems, it's still far too controlling.

Frivolous lawsuits related to widening corridors so morbidly obese people on their little scooters should be just that, though: frivolous.

Oh, so the medical system is to be overrun with diabetes and heart conditions and obesity issues, while people who actually take care of themselves are supposed to pay higher premiums and taxes on beverages and things they like? and that is not controlling?

Ya, lets blame everyone else, and when that does not work lets blame genetics.

So you know what… let’s make an exception for those with ‘medical conditions’ which would be what… maybe 1 in 100,000 of those who are overweight.

The problem these days comes down to personal responsibility.

No one is responsible for anything anymore.

My kid is failing school – blame the school system

My kid is got hurt playing a sport – take the coach to court

My kid is fat – blame the soft drink industry

Blame everyone one else for everything.

No, but instead of a weird creepy tax that requires the government to provide medical checks, roll it into a higher premium on their medical insurance. (Unless, of course, they have a medical condition.)

But isn’t the best kind of medical care: prevention?

If every person was allowed one free physical check up every year it would promote better health, then based on that check up the the results are given for the tax requirement.

Yes, but then if you wanted to be fat you couldn't just find an insurance company that doesn't care and you'd have to pay a tax.

Also, aren't the insurance companies the one who need the extra money as they end up paying for whatever weight-related problems you have?

True, and that is a good option, but I guess I come from a place where you don't need to have medical insurance because there is the public health system, so I guess I am basing my idea from the system that I am familiar with.

It sounds like we both agree, but on different methods of implementation.

Either way the result would be the same I guess.

Yes, just what we need... more money going into the hands of the government because they are oh so good at spending it on the right things that the common man needs.

We hardly need any more taxes and bankrupting people just because of their weight is absurd as I wouldn't be surprised that some overweight people aren't well off financially.

Losing weight is not exactly easy for everyone and for some their body makes it very easy to gain and difficult to lose while some have it the other way around.
