Do you look down on websites/forums that use a free domain? Does that give off the impression that its an amateur site that is going nowhere?

tbh, if people are serious about their forum, they would be willing to spend money on it, forums which use free-domains don't normally succeed, it shows dedication to your forum, and not that you just want to have a forum and put it up in a few minutes.

In my past experience, any time I register at a forum using a free domain, it is usually closed down within a few weeks/months. Ones that have purchased a domain tend to last. It shows me that they have some dedication to their forum.

As far as websites, if its a page with some information, I could care less what the domain is.

6 years on.. Mine is still going. Until september Headbangers Haven had free domains.

The only reason I switched to a paid is because my co admin has paid for secondpad.

I don't think there is anything wrong with free domains.

I am extremely serious and dedicated to my forum. But i have never had the ability to pay for a domain.

So IF a person has a Free Domain forum/site that HAS been up for more than a few months or weeks, that REALLY Shows Dedication and that it is a GOOD Forum indeed I guess!

YES, I believe that REALLY Shows Dedication when you aren't paying for it.

You don't have that Prod in your rear end that tells you you had better admin that thing or your money is down the tube.

No, we free domainers do it for just the Pure Love of it! - No incentive is needed!

Also free domains (like .co.cc) can go down quite often, but I have never seen a forum with a free domain last longer than a year to be honest.

Hey - LOOK around!

I haven't had those problems at all - or anyone I know really.

I know MANY Free domains - including all of mine that have been up for a LOT of years. (A LOT of Years!)

It is based completely on How Much you Put Into your forum - NOT who hosts them.

Also - In fact - I have seen more paid domains going down more often than free ones do!

co.cc is only free for a year then you have to pay for it. Which is probably why people dont continue with theyre forum.

I don't care about if the forum has money spent on it or not.

Yes, the paid ones have cool features and prob do last longer, but at the end of the day its about the community that I care, weather it lasts two days or two years.

See guys it not like when it comes to forums, only few forums succeed. It doesnt mean that the forums which invest money will surely be successful. We should focus on the forum's content instead of what it looks like, where is it hosted.

If one is new to forums and learning how they work and how to administrate one, then I don't mind if they use a free domain. But if it's someone who knows what they're doing and want to have a successful forum, then they should get a paid domain name.

Actually - NOT Necessary.

Why Should you?

Only reason is if you want to pay money and maybe Make money with ads, etc.

Or maybe do some different Custom things to your forums.

But, Otherwise, I just can't see it.

Free domains are good with me, I have 4 websites that are free. One I don't use anymore becuase it was for my forum that was hacked and then closed. The others I still use.

Not everybody has money they can spend, they are only dedicated if it doesn't close down in a few months.

Look at my suikocross and winds of fate, I will never close them down Unless I die. They are both free becuase I have no money.

I look at free domains and whatnot as a perfect way for a new forum owner to get a good amount of practice in runner a forum and to see if he is cut out for the job. Having a free domain doesn't eliminate you as dedicated necessarily, I ran a forum back when I was around eleven and I was extremely dedicated, a giant notebook full of ideas and was on their countlessly thinking of ways to better it, but at the time I didn't have the money to pay for a domain. But just because now I do I don't believe it made me anymore dedicated.

I don't think having a domain makes you a more dedicated admin. I have seen forums get paid domain names and shut down in a week. So..what that guy said a few posts back. We do it for fun.

You obviously haven't been to any serious web-master forums, everyone says you need a domain before you start, people don't trust or want to deal with sites that can't even get a paid domain for their site. You NEED a domain if you want to look professional.

Not necessarily, but it's probably best to get a proper domain for your site. Even if you don't have advanced hosting, a domain is always a nice thing to have.

What the hell... No you don't. I'd call me and my co-admin professsional. And we've done 95% of the work with headbangers haven on a free host.

I'm not saying anything about the admins being professional at all. I'm saying your board looks unprofessional if you don't have a domain. What would you think if a large company say, like, amazon had a free domain, www.amazon.freewebs.com who the hell would want to buy from there.

It's all about appearance and professionalism, you could be the best admin in the world, but some people wouldn't be inclined to join if you had a free domain.
