Some of you know that i run my own forum. The discussion varies from sports to video games to movies & TV all the way to your everyday life. My question for you is, what is the best way to get my forum known so it could grow like Off Topix did?

Add it to search engines, put it in sigs, send PERSONAL messages to people (no default crap, that'd be spam)...

I think I saw a guide on this somewhere...

On some places it might be. Which is why you should make it personal and not at all spammy

The way I find works the most although it is a little hard is the PERSONAL message way. Join a similar forum to yours, post some, get known, make friends, invite them. Takes some time and dedication but it works a lot of the time. As for search engines, I mean that is necessary but I don't think they do much in terms of the big picture.

I would avoid PM advertising as that can get you banned at several forums and give your forum a bad reputation. It doesnt mater if you put a personal spin on it or whatever. People will realize that the only reason you are PM'ing them is because of ulterior motives, not to chat with them.

I do not use it but this program called xRumer is supposed to be good for advertising forums.

Best way to get your forum known is to have a community of members who like being on your forum. Then word of mouth referrals happen.

Also advertise it everywhere you can find and bump as much as is allowed (if its a forum).

I'd say having a lot of patience in the path of getting your forum known. Is a good thing.
