Do you think they are real or not? Why?

I had some pretty creepy things happen in the house I grew up in which is why I do believe in spirits/ghosts. Things like doors closing by themselves (there was no air flow or anything that would make the door close). We would hear footsteps coming up and down the stairs when no one was on the steps. We would hear voices coming from other rooms when we were home alone.

I would have friends over and not tell them anything about the house and they would also hear and see weird things. Some of them never came back because they said it was too creepy and weird.

That is why I do believe in ghosts.

Those are not the same phenomenon.

What is referred to as a 'ghost' was originally human.

A Poltergeist (literally: Noisy Spirit) can be something else entirely.

The question came up the other day in an on line forum as one of the subjects of a non-fiction book the Desk was reading.

In the message, they wanted to know if 'ghosts' were real.

The only available short answer was particularly unsatisfying to all involved: "Well, yes, and no. Sort of."

The Desk told them to stand by for a longer answer, which, all things considered, may not be any more satisfying, but it will take longer to read than those six words....

I am convinced of their existence due to an inexplicable event. A few years back, I lost my grandfather, who was my frequent companion in football discussions. He had gifted me a helmet from our cherished team. I had left it facing one direction on my desk, but when I returned, it had been turned towards my computer chair, as though it was observing me. Although I have cats, I always seal my computer room when I'm away for extended periods to maintain its cool temperature.
