Do you plan on attending any sort of college/university in the future? And if you already are, what is it?

The title of this thread is quite offensive. Just because someone doesn't go beyond high school education doesn't mean they'll be left flipping burgers. I mean, I don't have to go to to university to live out my dream... and my dream isn't flipping burgers - far from it in fact.

I agree. My grandpa never went to college and neither did my uncle and they both own big houses and nice cars. There is lots of jobs out there that pay extremely well without needing a degree.

I too feel that the title of this thread is a little offensive. For one thing, I wanted to do college, but unfortunately, my health seemed to have other plans for me, which appeared to be staying at home and finding a job, and in all honesty, I'm happy with the job I got. I may do college in the future, but for right now, with my health the way it is, I'm better off just staying at home and working at the job I do have.

Wait, do you guys live in the US? Or is your part of America just loaded with jobs? People without a high school education are not going to be able to compete for jobs when the unemployment rate is 10%.

Sorry, I had no idea it was possible to get a well-paying job without furthering your education.

Of course, nobody stops to think for even a second that I may not know that.

I have to agree. Making good money without going to college is an unrealistic goal in my opinion, and you really can't make a whole lot of money these days without furthering your education, especially with today's economy. I'm not trying to be offensive here, but even my mother who went to college for four years is having a hard time getting a job, so you try and find one without a degree. You probably won't get very far.

I mean I think it's dumb that we are trying to shove everyone into college, especially with how much education costs today. But right now the US doesn't have an educational infrastructure that incorporates things like trade schools.

Well, this title is offensive but...My cousin didn't even finish high school and works for Bombardier now...But that was way back then...Looking at today..Education does have a great importance I find..

Well, I graduated from high school 2 years ago, diploma and everything. It's just that my health problems have prevented me from going out on my own right away, so yeah, that's why I'm working now, and to an extent, I almost prefer it that way at the moment.

I see.. So there is suddenly no longer a need for police officers, construction workers, repair men, plumbers, bus drivers, truck drivers, rail road workers, Electricians, Mechanics, Pilots, Crane Operators, Mail Carriers, Carpenters, Prison Guards, Roofers, Painters, Secretaries, Chefs, Welders, Pest Control, Brick Layers, Real Estate Agents, Actors/ Actresses, groundskeepers, Maintenance Men, Security Guards, Travel Agents, Bank Tellers, Tailors, Probation Officer, Fireman, Taxi Driver, Store Owner/Manager, Farmer, Engineers, , etc, etc, etc, etc, and I could list several hundred other jobs that pay well and require minimal training/certification and no college.

Just because you have degree in something doesn't mean you are going to have a perfect future which will land you that wonderful job and give you a happy life that you've always dreamed of. Many people who are working jobs I listed above will make more money than you will ever make and are very happy in their lives. College only one option, but to say that you will be a bum and working at Mc Donalds if you don't go is just plain ignorant.

You need a LOT of training to be an officer, a lot of flight school to become a pilot, a lot of training in the culinary arts to become a chef. Some of the jobs you've listed require 2+ years of college. Also, I never stated that any of those careers were unimportant, but I mean come on. Who wants to be a taxi driver their entire lives?

I never meant to be offensive, and I must admit that I didn't really think much about this when creating this thread. What I meant by flipping burgers is that you can get very few jobs without a degree.

No they don't, for many of them, you will only need to do some training and/or they require a certification. Which can be easy to get. You can learn the stuff yourself and pass a test or you can go through a trade school. Others will take you on and train you themselves and then certify you themselves.

And regarding the taxi driver statement, if someone is happy doing that or being a garbage man or whatever then who are we to judge them. They are out there working and providing for their family and I can respect that. Sadly other people are more superficial.

It's not being superficial, it's knowing that said person can do much better than driving people around or collecting garbage for a living. People can make so much more money and provide so much better for their families, yet choose the easy way out.

Easy way out? Lol.

What if said people grew up poor didnt have their parents holding their hands through life.. Lets say made a mistake and got pregnant at a young age, then had to get a job to support their family. Do you know how hard it is to have a full time job, a family, pay for and go to school?

Maybe if there was 40 hours in a day it would be possible.

Despite the scenario I provided above, some people enjoy having a blue collar job and are very happy with their lives. Whatever you chose to do with your life is your own business, whatever people choose to do their life is their buisness. Also like Ive said people can and do make a very good living without having a college degree.

People with college degree's can have a hard time finding a job as well. Its hard for everyone out there. I know a lady who has a degree and credentials for a teacher, but got laid off and cannot find another job as a teacher anywhere, so she is a secretary at some office now.

5 bucks says only half of the 100 richest people in the world went to college/uni.

Sure, higher education helps, but it's no get-outta-bad-life-free card.

By officer I'm going to assume you mean Police Officer. If so, yes training is needed, but it isn't done at a university. It's done at the police academy/college/school (whatever you call it) which is completely different from university. As is flight school and culinary school.
