A few of my friends only listen to underground/undiscovered bands and singers. They think they are soo cool because of it. They think anyone who listens to the mainstream/popular music is just a conformist or whatever.

What do you think? Is it cool to hate mainstream music? Do you care? Do you listen to whatever sounds good, mainstream or not?

I think it would be dumb to hate Mainstream just cause it's cool. But personally, for me. I listen to whatever sounds good. Mainstream or not. But I do tend to stick with Underground/Undiscovered more often though.

Everyones taste in music is different. I don't listen to listen to underground/undiscovered bands and singers. I like to listen to classic rock and jazz.

Cool = mainstream

If non-mainstream = cool, people will listen to non-mainstream music to be cool thus turning it into mainstream music.

See how this could be problematic?

I pick songs on a song-by-song basis... Though, admittedly, I'm not the biggest fan of what comes out of that popular radio station.

I just happen to think that the current mainstream music is awful. Not that I listen to underground stuff, that's usually very low quality and awful too (at least in the genres I care about). I mostly listen to music from before the year 2000. But each to their own, I won't judge anyone with a horrible music taste too badly.

Most mainstream, i.e. played on the radio music tends to sound...exactly the same as everything else. There's no soul, no meaning behind it. It's just done to make money, there's nothing intelligent or insightful behind the lyrics.

And that's why I hate mainstream music.

I don't really like most mainstream, it just doesn't as good as most of the underground bands and stuff. I don't think I'm cool because I don't listen to much mainstream...

I listen to what sounds good, I just happen to think that most mainstream doesn't sound good.

Good question! I guess it depends on what you class as mainstream. I mainly listen to Metal and Rock (with the odd bit of Blues, Country and Pop thrown in for good measure). I would class a band like Metallica as mainstream, but my sister (who doesn't listen to metal at all) probably wouldn't.

That aside, I generally don't care whether a band is considered mainstream or not. But, with that said, a lot of my music collection is from bands who aren't very well known. I think this is due to the genres I enjoy listening to. I'm currently loving a Black Metal 'n' Roll band called Plaag and a Death Metal band called Spine Extraction - neither of which would really survive in the Top 40 or whatever, but I love them because they appeal to me. Music is, and always has been, a matter of taste.
