If there are two of the same types of forums, ie- 2 gaming forums. Each have the same amount of members and such how do you choose? Me I go with the one that has a nice theme lol and seems like its laid back and has good members.

I choose the one that feels more friendly too me. Just cause the person cant make skins or they have a crappy one, doesn't imply that they dont have a great forum you know?

Members and content matter more to me than anything. Sure, having a good skin is nice, but not even that's everything. I feel that content and members are just as good. If the members are getting along well, and the content is interesting, as if there are interesting topics to read and respond to, I'll gladly join up with that forum and consider being active.

I look for:

> Posts that are relevant, not brain numbingly moronic, etc.

> A theme that isn't horrible, or, dare I say, is actually good.

> A community that isn't made up of idiots.

> Good statistics; a few new members every week or two, new posts daily, etc.

> Interesting topics to discuss.

I like the smaller laid back forums. I join a forum to have fun and meet people. I lurk and read posts and if I feel like it's a welcoming and not Nazi run forum then I join. I can tell right away by reading the rules whether or not a forum is for me or not.

Most people these days seem to pick forums based on who they're hosted with and what software they're on... Personally, I don't like that, because for me, a forum has never been about the host or the software, a forum is about the content that is provided and how well the community gets along together. That's mattered more to me than any host or software out there. The only time I get a little thrown off is if a forum in question looks nice but is too hard to navigate or even so much as finding the register or log in buttons... or if there are too many sections to go through.

I would choose the one with the best community. If I saw 2 forums, both had the same activity etc. as said in the first post, and I had to join one. One has a really good community and great staff, and one has good activity but a bad community. I would go for the community.

The one with the best theme, friendliest staff and members, and most active. For me, that's what separates good forums from bad ones.

I don't, they seem to chose me to join them.

However, there has been a couple I choose to walk away from.

How do they choose you to join them? The only method I can think of is by PM advertising, which is against the rules on 90% of forums, or by email??

I generally only give the forum the time of day if the theme is tasteful and not a pile of horrendous distorted colors for I greatly look at it as a prime example that little to no effort was put into the site and even if the discussion is awesome, it'll bother me.

As long as the skin is readable and not horrendous, I don't really care. Most of the time I join both and see which one suits me better.

Why not be active on both. Im sure you have the time.

Even if a member did have the time, that's not always the case. Sure, both forums might look really nice to an extent, but there's more to it than just having the time to be active and even dedicated. There are staff and members to consider as well. Not just the time allowance, but also that. For instance, you could go on Forum number one and the staff and members would be running amok. Staff being rude to not only fellow staff members but also fellow members as well, and members being rude to one another and staff not doing even so much as giving out warnings. Then you could check out forum number two, and everyone's being nice and friendly to each other, the forum's in good hands, there are awesome plans in site for this forum, and everyone's just generally having a good time. So there's a lot more to it than just having the time to be active and hang out. I know, because I've countered this lots of times with joining up with forums.
