I also post my link wherever possible, and look out for post-sharing forums - i.e. administrators that post at my forum in return for me doing the same. I have posted my site in numerous directories, and I'm in the process of gathering the funds for a few thousand leaflets to printed off (need to design a logo first though lol)

Well, back in the day I PM advertised. Works like a charm.

I for one, Never understood why people dislike it. I think yea, if I spam everyone on this forum with an advert to a forum then its bad, but if you join little forums and PM the admin an advert, it shouldnt be the same.
After all, who says its bad? Its not illegal, Just a moral that people make it out to be bad.
Most forums put it in their rules (like this one) not to PM advertise. So if you go somewhere and PM advertise, then get banned.. Then you cant get too mad.
I guess if they dont have it in their rules, then technically you didnt do anything wrong.

It pisses people off to no end but I have seen it get results on his boards so I can't say it doesn't actually work because people do join because of those adverts. lol
People found the best way to get him to stop was to crack and destroy the board he was pm advertising which some were fond of doing whenever he tried making one on IF. He had to go to VB to do this without getting the board cracked but people tried so many times to get on staff to leak and potentially take it down but none were successful to my knowledge.

We don't have it in our rules (at least, I don't think we do) but I know of a lot of boards that do, and I think that's good that they do have those rules, because I for one hate getting PMs saying please join my forum. Since it's not a rule for now, if I ever do get a PM like that, I'll just delete it.
