I am not talking about forums that provide a service (like an advert or graphics forum).

Do you join a new forum only if you plan to be an active or do you join just for the hell of it and see how it goes from there?

It really depends on the forum in question. If I like the look and feel of the community, and everything's going great, then I'll consider joining up with the intention of being an active member... If I get too much of a bad impression (i.e. swearing in every thread, loads of bashing going on, etc.) then I probably won't be active. I really look at the content more than anything aside from members. If they have interesting subjects that are likely to keep me going for a while, then heck yes I will definetly be active.

Usually I like to know how it feels like when joining and then I'll decide from there whether to be active or not.

That's actually me as well. I've joined a lot of forums in the three years that I've been foruming... some I've chosen to remain active on, other really good ones have shut down sadly, only a few really good ones remain.... so yeah.

I usually lurk at forums to get a feel for them and then move on most of the time. I'm not much of a joiner. So when I do join, I try and get active.

I'm not going to waste my time registering on a forum if I don't plan to be active on it.

I'll look around first and see how much activity is on it and what kinds of subjects before joining.

I don't mind if a forum is just starting out and doesn't have activity... all boards, no matter how old they are, have their slow points. As long as the posts are recent enough and not nearing a year old anytime soon, then I'll gladly join in. I've joined some forums in my time where the place looked active enough, but then you go on like a week later to see that you're the only one who's made any posts at all in the last week or two... I think virtually that's when one realizes that the place has probably died, though, especially if this cycle continues for months on end.

When I was banned from FG I joined a few other forums with ex-FG members on, as I wanted to stay in contact with my friends. Some were slow moving and quite dull in the end. Some I just lurk on and don't join. Tbh, this was the best site I visited and it's still very fresh and enjoyable.

The FG admin lifted the ban and invited Oscar and I back but even though it's great to be back among friends, it's still actually quite stagnant over there. Very few people seem to post compared to the 'old days' and the subjects posted are overall rather dull sadly.

So I guess my answer would be that I join just for the hell of it and see how it goes from there.

I've joined at least a thousand forums by now. I only stay on those that can actually entertain me enough into wanting to come back. Mostly I won't join a forum if it has the default skin of whatever forum software it is, just because a forum without a unique skin probably means it's not going to be worked on very much before it dies.
