The use of gaming footage within videos is quite a common occurrence. Sometimes developers are quite happy with the advertising their products are getting. At other times they are...well the opposite of happy. Nintendo, however, seems to have a more novel approach. Rich from ReviewTechUSA has a video where he looks at an affiliate programme Nintendo are going to be implementing. It will be one where you split the ad revenue you make from your uploaded videos which contain Nintendo footage. Now I am quite a novice when it comes to the world of streaming gameplay. My experiences don't really extend that far beyond using footage for sociocultural commentary and reviews. I am curious though as to what implications people think this will have.

Nice idea. Share the wealth and let people see how games are played!

It isn't exactly "sharing the wealth". Up until now, Nintendo were having videos/channels that featured footage from their games shut down. This is just a case of "you can use our footage, but you've gotta kick some proceeds up to us" which in my opinion is just another reason Nintendo are failing.

Well isn't footage of their games copyrighted to them or something? They are within their legal boundaries to dispute footage being shown, this is some sort of compromise and that's better than shutting folks down like before.

Well most companies just view it as free publicity. Hell, both Sony and Microsoft allow you to stream/upload gameplay direct from the console with the PS4/Xbox One. For nothing. But Nintendo is being a bit cheap and demanding money for the privilege.

Well that is a good point. Also people who look up game-play videos probably already have purchased the game and just need some help. :dontknow:

That is definitely a strong point you raise there. Despite having a PS4 myself, I had completely forgotten about the share functionality which is incorporated into the console itself.

The free publicity aspect is definitely one I can agree with you on. Numerous times I have used video reviews to influence whether or not I am wanting to buy a particular game. Not that one person can be used as a reliable sample size by any stretch of the imagination.

What do you think about people who are themselves using their videos as a source of income? Is it more justified for Nintendo to ask them for a share of the ad revenue? Or are they indistinguishable from other users who upload gameplay footage?

Apparently Nintendo's previous approach was to require that users included Nintendo advertisements in their videos. The revenue of which was shared between Youtube and Nintendo. If this is so, would that make the development more positive?
