How do you feel about people using limewire / torrents / things of that nature to download music?

Well technically they are sharing with others.

It's the new way to try music. It's very good for artists because it's a MUCH easier way to discover new music that is otherwise hard to obtain or obscure. These people will then buy tickets to see these obscure bands (bands profit FARRR more from ticket sales than album sales).

It's a positive thing in my opinion.

Very good points. The record companies and distributors get most of the money from album sales.

I don't download much much, only when i really like a song, but i use Torrents a little bit.

Tell me how artists profit from album sales if everyone is downloading the albums illegally?

Bands only get around 4% of album sales unless they completely produce and distribute the album themselves whereas tickets and merchandise are where the real money is earnt. Even if everyone was buying albums instead of downloading, bands would still earn more from tickets and merch.

Well, they profit from the people who don't download the albums illegally.

I torrent whole albums and I use Limewire for individual songs. If the artist/band is local, or just starting out, I'll buy the album. But to be honest, I have Pink Floyd's entire discography and although I have purchased hard copies of most of the albums, Pink Floyd is mostly dead and gone now, they've gone their individual ways. I'm certain they make enough off middle-aged men, and I am not going to pay for a copy of Zabriskie Point just to own it. (By the way that album sucks.) I don't want to buy an entire album, or a single, just to hear the song and not like it. If I like an album enough I will buy it, but not before hearing it first.

And how did I get into Pink Floyd in the first place? I typed Pink Floyd into Limewire, and they had a whole load of their most downloaded songs. That introduced me to a fair few of their albums. And if I had bought an album off them, I would only know that album. I don't think by downloading the Wall would I have wanted to get their other albums.

This is just an example of my point of torrents and limewire being the new way to try out music. People buy albums if they really like them and that is where bands can still make money from album sales(even thuogh the band doesn't earn very much through those sales

If only that were the case. The trouble is that more people may be finding out about bands, but they don't seem to be supporting them. I've been to so many gigs where the venue isn't even half-full. This isn't due to a lack of promotion, it's just it seems like people can't be bothered.

Most music isn't hard to obtain these days - most bands/artists have a web page or MySpace with links where you can buy their stuff online. Also, CDbaby is fantastic for obscure stuff... I can't tell you how many albums I've bought on impulse from that site... it's getting ridiculous. Also, most sites (CD Baby, Amazon, etc) give you the option to listen to the music before you decide to part with your hard earned cash.

I've downloaded some music to see what a band is like before buying an album, but it's not something I like doing often. I usually check out a band on MySpace or Youtube and then buy the CD. I still don't like buying MP3s... I like to feel like I've got the complete package (the CD, the inlay, the artwork, etc).

I don't use Limewire/Torrents to buy music, I actually do it the honest way...

I wouldn't call it honest, I would say it is morally right
