Do you think forums are worth monetizing? Is there a right way and a wrong way to do it?

Have you ever made money from placing ads on a forum? What's the most you've ever made?

I once got a $5 check from AdBrite

Wow they went under... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AdBrite

Considering how much some people pay for an existing board it has to be profitable I guess. Personally I prefer a donation based system. All members know server and license cost can be high and a lot don't mind helping out to keep it online.

As for actually monetizing it... Seeing it as a business takes away the fun and completely changes the atmosphere. I usually don't stay long on that kind of forum. Certainly not if they require me to pay before I can post in certain areas.

I remember that one,and I used Clicksor when I still had a site.....they did pay.

Paid ads are always fun to have in a board if you actually have members who'd pay for that.
