I was thinking about joining another general discussion forum. As I read the rules, I saw this:

Failure to create an introduction thread after 15 days of registering will result in your account being banned.

What are your thoughts on this?

An introduction thread is good if you want to be known by other members. Sometimes it can be helpful so they won't think it's a spambot. What's the issue with it then? :|

Who cares if someone fails to make an introduction topic? Some members just want to skip formalities & start in on the discussions and that's okay with me. :)

If they had such a problem with people not posting an intro then all they need to do is set it so you are put into a group that can only see the intro forum and requires one post to move out of it into the regular group. You then disable the ability for the first group to make replies so they have to make a topic and your problem is solved. I suppose this admin didn't think this one through all the way, huh?

I know this was often done as a spam bot preventative measure for forums running something like Zetaboards or Invisionfree where it was really one of a few things you could really do to prevent a spam bot from spamming the board back in the day.

I've seen a few forums with rules of that sort, and I find it absolutely ridiculous personally. Of course I love introduction topics (as a forumer, webmaster, or just a new member), but it's really not a necessity.

I totally agree with what Nebulous said. People being banned for rules like that are just plain ridiculous. I should know. You do everything right on the wrong forum and you get banned by a bunch of tightwad jerks. Like the old saying goes, "you can't win for losing."

Well in my oppinion they've lost a great member, Not worth even bothering about.
I rarely make an intro thread, can't be bothered, people just usually put hi i'm blah blah from blah blah anyway. Waste of time.

Seems like a ridiculous rule to me. The important thing is contributing to discussions and introductions are just a means to let yourself be more known to the community if that's what you want to do. However, if you take that choice away then the whole feel of the forum is suddenly hostile, because it goes from a welcoming website to, "Here, do this mundane thing or you're not worth our time."

How's this for an introduction:

Hello, I am the new Admin of this site. Current staff have all been banned. I have changed all members passwords. I have removed the PM system due to members bitching and moaning (yes, I have been reading your PM's). If you need your new password, please PM me. Oops, guess you can no longer do that. Instead you may try to guess your new password. After 3 unsuccessful attempts, however, your account will be deleted.

Have a nice day!

I'm betting the admin of that forum is just being on a power-trip, ie abusing his admin powers. Staff reading people's PM's? That's impossible. In order to do that PM's must be reported or directed to staff. And about him changing passwords, that's very strange. O.o Unless he's a hacker and he's now attacking the entire forum.

This is a fake introduction I wrote to make fun of the site that requires you to create an introduction thread or get banned. I was asking what you guys thought of it. It's just for fun as I know if I really posted that introduction, I'd be banned when the admin saw it.

I think it's fine to require an introduction in some cases though the sentence informing about it could be nicer. Whether or not I would bother registering depends on the forum and what it's about.

Not really, most forum softwares don't have built in functionality to make it easy, but it's not like they're encrypted.

 That would be a funny thing to see on a forum. I would be like "Are they serious?!?!" then I'd proceed to hit the little red X up in the corner of my screen and forget about that forum. :P

You wouldn't even register to check if they're serious? :P

But then the hacker-admin would IP ban the new member there. :P
