A smear campaign is an intentional, premeditated effort to undermine an individual's or group's reputation, credibility, and character. Mud slinging, like negative campaigning, most often targets government officials, politicians, political candidates, and other public figures.

Well the election for governor is coming up in California and it seems like every other commercial is a smear campaign against the people running. Do you think these should be allowed? Do you think the people running should be focusing on making themselves and what they stand for seem more attractive rather than making the other guy look bad?

The first one, that's exactly what UK politics is like at the moment. Too much pointing out what is wrong with the other parties and not enough focus on what's so good about themselves.

Under certain circumstances. Sometimes you'll hear an ad and it's completely false and it's just political nonsense, but sometimes they're actually informative.

However, I view most of those ads as childish. It's like saying he did this so that makes me better. Instead of making others in the race look bad to look good, make yourself look good by doing good.

Those ads won't make you look any better, rather less worse.

Hm. Recently there have been ads against the Liberal party (it's an election year) saying that Tony Abbott will bring back WorkChoices, and he just won't call it that. In a recent public poll, there was 2% difference between the two parties. These ads can definitely change the swing of things.

I don't think smear campaigns should have a place in politics. Downplay your opponent's politics, not his character. If he has a serious character flaw, he shouldn't have a chance at being elected... but then again.

The problem I have seen is this...it's usually the person that is guilty of something that screams smear campaign. If the info is false, then it is a smear, if the info is true, then the people have a right to know...Don't they?
