So what is it and why?

From the placement of the paw in the down position and the trim on the steps, I say the cat is going down the stairs.

Definitely down. If he were going up, the door at the top of the picture would show more than it already is. Plus what the others said up above.

For all the reasons everyone's posted they believe the cat is going down,

it appears he's going UP, to me. Plus, I don't see a door behind him...I see the glare from the sunlight, outdoors.

I wonder if there IS a "right" or "wrong" answer, or if it's simply an exercise in how much one's point of view affects how they *see* things, and thus colors what they believe about the world around them...and what is true/right/real.

If the cat is Schrödinger's cat the point is moot...no

Actually the surface is flat so it's neither....js

It's going down because the light ect would make it an obvious answer.

Does that make sense?

I think it's going down, because no one in their right mind would put trim on the top of steps.

I agree. Plus I don't have cats but is there a clue in its tail as far as balance? It's coming up.....

Coming down, notice the tread, it is cantilevered over the riser and trimmed underneath.

I have NOT looked at anyone else's post. Just saying.
