How long of a grace period do you allow your staff to be absent without any notice at all before you start contacting them and eventually demoting the person?

I usually give them three days to a week. Of course, it's no biggie really as I run a general chat forum, so it doesn't matter when you come on as long as you're on and posting and what-not. But I do three days to a week, and if they don't turn up after a week or more, then I'll drop them a friendly PM or email and find out what's going on.

Usually 1 or 2 months. I'm really laid back when it comes to staff.

Wow, that's a long time. How many staff members do you have?

Yeah, a month is a long time. That'd be enough time to probably make a person forget that they even have a position on your forum to begin with as a staff member. Although I can see this being a reasonable amount of time if it was a really active forum with a lot of staff. But even then a week or two should be plenty, even if you have a lot of staff. Sure, that would probably equal a lot of PMs/emails to be sent out, but really, that's a bit overboard in a sense.

I currently have 2 admins (me included) and 3 mods.

My staff are really good though, I am usually told if they are going to be away. But for example my old moderator who I had to demote because of inactivity, I started chasing him up after 2 months. I didn't receive any reply from PMs on my forum, his forum and another forum he posted at. And he was online. So he went

The staff I have are members that I know or am in contact with alot outside of the forum. They are well respected on the forum and not likely to 'forget' theyre position.

Probably a week or two before I started asking. Then wait another week or two before I made them an Elite member & told them that they can get in touch with me whenever they have whatever issues they have straightened out.

I personally have 5 staff members at the moment and I am already looking in to why some of them are not around. It has been 3 days so I get curious. I do not want to hold them in staff position if they wait until everything gets huge and famous and then start to post and over use their powers. I only like mature people who know what they are doing and dedicated some time to the site as well. So I guess a week for me before I start to demote.

Some questions for you:

  • How many out of the 5 staff members are not around?
  • Do you not rely on your staff to create new topics and keep the board moving?
  • What do you consider to be mature people?

3 days? That's pretty strict, don't you think? Perhaps your staff members have good reasons why they can't be around.

There's really no reason why you wouldn't log in every day in which you are unable to contact anyone as in regards to your situation outside of an internet connection failure. Not showing up and not saying that you are having issues preventing you form logging in after a few days would definitely make me want to know what's up. A week with not showing up or contacting me would get you demoted. Two to three weeks of not showing up but provided notice of your situation would be long enough to demote you with the option to return when your issues are sorted out and you can come back to the forum.

There is tons of reasons. If people are having a personal crisis, I doubt a priority would be getting on the computer to notify people on forums.

I personally wait a week or two, I recently just added another admin (so that makes 2 of us) and we are waiting for the website to get a bit more active before we promote someone else. However I don't have an issue with the other admin since he is on every night and we talk to each other outside of the website. But with my staff it would be a week or two depending if they are usually always on or if they never really come on or do any work or anything.

I would wait three weeks before I attempt to make contact. After four to five weeks, I would oust his/her position, at least until contact is made.
