What is spam?

Posts that bring nothing to the conversation (ie one word answers, smilies on their own, etc), posts made by the dreaded spambots that contain millions of links to sites, and posts from members that just want to advertise their own forums and have paid no attention to the rules.

When it becomes just plain stupid, i.e., a million memes, Cialis or Viagra, Medication you can afford, JOIN MY FORUM BLAHBLAHBLAH.NET, porn, etc.

I'd prefer it if people would actually participate in the conversation instead of replying with LMAO this thread is sooooo funny or I agree with <insert name here> but I suppose if thats what they want to do then thats what they want to do. But its funny when you search their posts and they have hundreds of posts without having really said anything. lol

There are two different kinds of spam:

The first is members who post one word, or a smilie, and are constantly making threads go off topic. All of this just to up their post count. They have nothing to contribute to the forum.

The second are the spambots.

Stupid

Pointless

Annoying

Message

It can be all three (SPA) of the above or it could just be one individually. Or a couple.

Stupid OR Pointless Message

Stupid OR Annoying Message

Annoying AND/OR Stupid Message

etc.

Thank you RFS (Dracophile) for the spam acronym.

I thought spam was a canned meat product that is rather good when fried and served with a side of eggs.

back to the topic so Miss Jazzy won't get mad at me for going off topic.

I'd call any repetitive posts that just boost a users post count with contributing anything meaningful to the discussion spam, as well as the aforementioned ad-spewing robots and such.

There are dedicated threads where people can go in and put in a smiley face (the logging on or off threads, etc) or and copy the email joke or serious warning letter their sister in law sent to them . And that's where they should do it. Not in a discussion thread.

I agree with the people who say that spam includes members who don't really contribute to the discussion. One worded posts and smilies could also count. However, I'm pretty lenient about this on my forum, as long as it contributes the discussion, it should be no problem.

I define spam as stupid pointless annoying messages that are posted by stupid painfully annoying morons.

forum spam is promoting something that you sell by adding links to it in your sig or posts or using a revenue generating host

on my usual forum the lifespan of someone doing that is normally measured in minutes
