What makes you like a song?

The melody, the lyrics, or something else?

Usually the musicianship and the message. A song needs to 'speak' to me, lyrically or musically, or I just don't care for it.

Mostly the melody.

I enjoy dark and depressing themes. The Deftones are really good at demonstrating those elements.
Same here, you should try Fight the Fade or Smash into Pieces

Why do you think you enjoy dark and depressing themes?
A lot of people find the commonality of dark, depressing music comforting. To know others feel what they feel, and we all relate to it, to one degree or another

Composition, use of instruments (including vocals), and beat.

Same as PGen98, it has to 'speak' to me, after all music is art and art is most importantly a way to convey artist's emotional message.
Of course there's also music made solely for entertainment, money or utility purposes, but I'm not interested in it.
And I also prefer mostly dark music. To answer Nebulous' question, it's probably because it caries the most emotions, if you're happy you usually don't feel an urge to express yourself through art...
Of course every part of music has it purpose and importance. I like lyrical songs or instrumentals, but I think what I love the most are powerful, clean and expressive vocals.

I love music that comes across as different, yet still has enough of a good beat and melody that it's not odd sounding. If I can wiggle to it, all the better.

As a lyricist, the lyrics. Don't care for the beat as I don't like dancing.

I like up an upbeat sound to get me to like a song, it could literally sound like garbage to some, but if I like anything with an upbeat sound to it which would literally make me dance and the lyrics...has to have a good rhythm for the lyrics to fit the music with it.

The beat, lyrics, if I can come away really thinking about the song. I think if a song doesn't make you feel in a way, whether happy or sad, etc, it's not that great but that's just me. Everyone has their own feelings about it.
