Either the forums I've been to had no shoutbox or I just never bothered with them.

We don't have a shoutbox on my current forum, but we did on an older forum I had, and every now and again, if I was really that bored, sometimes I'd go through and read the old discussions just for the heck of it. I also used to go through it if, like, say I posted a question about something the night or two before, and I may have missed a reply, I'd go back through and see if my question had been answered yet. But that's it, really.
