Is War Ever Ethical?

If you start a war to stop an evil dictator and take hundreds of thousands of lives in the process, does that make the loss okay? At what point is war not the answer? Is it ever the answer, or just the only option?

In the current, most prominent case, it seems to be the only option. Or just stepping aside & letting it happen with no resistance.
A little guy rolling over to the whims of a bully dictator just seems asking too much.

I would think a drone strike could take care of the evil dictator situation in many cases. But it's difficult to know where the evil dictator has crossed the line.
But if the threat is more amorphous, e.g. ISIS, even "war" can't stop bad things from happening.
War is inevitable because, to put it bluntly, all men want to be the one with the biggest penis. To eliminate war, we have to eradicate egotism.

Regardless of the reason, regardless of who started it, war will never be ethical. War exists because of rich people who sit at the top of the food chain and want more, so they cry and say "we are at war now!", and rather than the one who initiated the war fighting for what they care so much about, they expect the middle and lower class to be cannon fodder.
