Been there more than a couple of times in life. It's not fun, at all!
It wasn't so bad, all my friends were poor too so it felt normal to us.
I had video games thanks to Christmas / birthday gifts from family.
We still had cable tv. No matter how broke my mom was, she always made that a priority.

"Too expensive" totally depends on what your parents were willing to spend money on. If you prioritize things then you can afford it. Sure you might be eating peanut butter and jelly or top ramen for dinner sometimes, but at least you have movies to watch!

Mmmm speaking of that, one poor person snack I used to have all the time was toasted bread, put margarine or butter on it and then sprinkle on the cinnamon / sugar mixture I made.
Absolutely! That was amazing! We also did toast sandwiches, literally one piece of bread toasted, two pieces not toasted with butter, toast in the middle, voila.
