(The Guardian) The World Cup Qatar from next month will have areas for drunk fans – and journalists – to sober up as the first to be held in a Muslim country with strict controls on alcohol yet still sponsored by a certain American beer brand. Per Reuters: Qatar will let ticketed fans buy alcoholic beer at matches starting three hours before kickoff and for one hour after the final whistle, but not during the match, Reuters reported in September, citing a source with knowledge of plans for the tournament.

Qatar 2022 chief executive Nasser Al Khater told Sky News in an interview published on Thursday that anyone who overdoes it would be looked after. “I know that there are plans in place for people to sober up if ... they’ve been drinking excessively,” Al Khater said, adding that it was to make sure they were safe and not harmful to others or themselves and said it was “a good idea”.

Al Khater also repeated assurances that LGBTQ+ fans were welcome and would feel at ease in Qatar. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, as it is in many countries in the Middle East. “Everybody is welcome here and everybody will feel safe when they come to Qatar,” he said when asked for his message to LGBTQ+ fans. When asked if that included gay fans holding hands in public, he said: “Yes” and said “yes” again when asked if that was a message of reassurance.

Tournament organisers have previously stressed that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or background, is welcome in Qatar, while also warning fans against public displays of affection. Qatar and several countries in the region banned Disney’s animated film “Lightyear” from screening in cinemas this year for featuring characters in a same-sex relationship.

As much as I disagree with the tournament taking place, given all that's wrong with Qatar and all that's surrounded the bidding and building of stadiums for this World Cup, since it is going ahead, got to support my England boys. They should get out of the group, hopefully they can do a bit more than that...got close in the Euros, let's see if they can do it again in the World Cup. Got my eyes on Belgium, Germany and Brazil, as well. All strong sides! France, Uruguay, Mexico, Netherlands...all possible for big things, as well!

They're decent this year, for sure, got a good squad together. 2002 they had a truly fantastic squad, but just couldn't put it away. Hopefully they can get out of the group, but it's a tough ask with a strengthened Wales squad and England to go up against!

Definitely compared to the crap side the U.S. fielded four years earlier that couldn't seem to find the exits in the 2018 Hex (finished 5th that year). Thankfully, U.S. Soccer cleaned house (it helped that America's three stars at the time, Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey, all retired headed off to the glue factory) and the U.S. actually started going the youth route instead - which is why we have some really good talents like Weston McKennie (Juventus), Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic), Brendan Aaronson (Leeds United), Josh Sargent (Norwich City), Giovanni Reyna (Br. Dortmund) and Christian Pulisic (Chelsea).

Yeah, I'm definitely excited.

The absolute best way to do it right there, give your young guns the chance to run with it, grow as players and thrive. Hopefully they'll do well.

Also reminds me of just how cursed Stuart Holden's career was. Loved him playing for Bolton, he was such a difference maker on the pitch, but that asshole Jhonny Evans comes along, shatters his leg and that's it. Every recovery effort leads to a re occurrence of the injury, he comes back to play for the US and immediately goes back out long term with another leg break. Poor guy was cursed, which is so sad because he was amazing.

how cursed Stuart Holden's career
Him and Taylor Twellman are poster children for shortened professional careers (in Twellman's case, concussions). :(
