2023 NHL Season

Nottingham Panthers forward Adam Johnson has died after suffering a serious cut to his neck from a skate during Saturday's Challenge Cup match.

The game against the Sheffield Steelers was stopped in the 35th minute as the 29-year-old American received emergency treatment from paramedics on the ice.

The Panthers said on Sunday they were "devastated" Johnson had died following a "freak accident".

"The club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him," they added.

...

Johnson previously played in North America's National Hockey League (NHL), playing 13 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Absolutely tragic, but honestly I'm surprised that it hasn't happened prior to now. Horrible situation reminiscent of Clint Malarchuk and Richard Zednik.

Not sure why so many pros refuse to wear a neck guard I only played up to high school bantam but always wore one it's light and don't have to wear it tight it pretty much just a cloth bib around neck...

I remember seeing it live on TV and thinking hopefully more will wear neck guard but they still didn't...

Agreed, it's a real shame that more protection tends to be frowned on. Look at the visor and how long it took to mandate that, and even then some still refused, citing their right to be grandfathered into the age of not wearing one. It will hopefully happen, and fingers crossed this makes more think about using them anyway.

Let's go Habs, let's go!

Montreal in the best division and off to good start so far hope they can keep it up rest of season...
Yeah, but still sad that they lost the Stanley Cup to Tampa 2 years ago.
