ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A strong earthquake of around 6 magnitude struck eastern Turkey early on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey and Turkish authorities said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

There was a lot of fear and panic among the people. It lasted about a minute. We felt it very strongly and everyone tried to get out onto the street, Nursel Sengezer, a Dogan News Agency correspondent in Karakocan, told broadcaster CNN Turk.

7.0 is worse than 6.2 obviously. We have them all the time in California: http://quake.usgs.gov/recenteqs/

We've had nearly 700 in the last week.

There was a 6.something a few weeks ago up north and not much stuff was damaged.

This is about Turkey. Not California. Turkey's building standards aren't as high as California's last time I checked.
