Master distiller Jimmy Russell discusses the biggest changes in the industry—and what's stayed the same—during his lengthy tenure

Last week, 79-year-old master distiller Jimmy Russell celebrated his 60th anniversary at Wild Turkey, the Lawrenceburg, K.Y.-based whiskey company. During his tenure — the longest of any master distiller in the industry — Russell has seen some three million barrels distilled under his supervision. Fittingly, Russell’s milestone falls during National Bourbon Heritage Month and is being celebrated with a new special blend, Wild Turkey Diamond Anniversary, crafted by Russell’s son, Eddie, who himself has spent 34 years with the company.

I've always been a whiskey girl, though my first choice is John Daniels. Wild Turkey is a close second.

It's been a long time since I've had Wild Turkey. I think I should remedy that very soon.

I've heard that when JD dropped the proof to make Mrs. Clinton happy that they added more charcoal flavor to still give it some 'bite'.

I've not had enough of it in my life to know.

A Legacy Betrayed

Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 is a simple reminder that some things just never change. And shouldn’t. This is the old-time whiskey made as our fathers made it. Remaining true to Jack Daniel’s original recipe and charcoal-mellowed character means folks today enjoy the same sipping whiskey awarded seven international gold medals.

So says Jack's Daniel's web site. Rather inspiring, isn't it? Such noble sentiments should warm the cockles of the most cynical drunkard's heart.

Unfortunately, not a word of it is true. For the second time since the Brown-Forman Corporation acquired the distillery in 1956, they have lowered the proof of Jack Daniel's Black Label Tennessee Whiskey. Fifteen years ago they dropped its original 90 proof to 86, and very recently, and might I say with zero fanfare, they degraded it to 80 proof.

Oooo, Wild Turkey is absolutely WONDERFUL!! I think you're nuts, Nebulous, but hey, to each their own, right?

I'm nuts because you like a gross beverage? To each their own. XD. ..to be fair, if I drank it mixed properly with something else, it would probably be good. The only time I've ever drank it was doing shots and its haaaaarsh!
