A zombie in the movies if you think about it is just a virus that hijacks a corpse to use as a way to enter the world we live in instead of the micro world that the virus lives in. If it is possible then we are bound to find the way then be stupid enough to unleash it on the world either due to the work of evil people or just very stupid people. May this never become possible.

Historically zombies may have been used in places like Haiti to work the cane fields. But instead of reanimated corpses, they were unlucky individuals who had been enslaved by a 'zombie master' with powerful drugs and then used for menial labor.
The idea of the walking dead probably arose when somebody saw old Uncle Hifie raking the trash pit at the mill when the family had been told that he'd been lost at sea off a fishing boat.
