US aid worker Abdul-Rahman Kassig, who was known as Peter Kassig before he converted to Islam, has reportedly been killed by Islamic State militants.
The 26-year-old was seized by IS fighters in northern Syria in 2013.
Mr Kassig founded an aid group that focused on providing Syrian refugees with medical supplies and food. He also gave medical training to Syrians.
He has been described as "open, honest and motivated by the simple desire to help people".
Mr Kassig, from Indiana, joined the US army rangers in 2006, and was deployed to Iraq in 2007.
He was honourably discharged for health reasons, and studied political science at Butler University in Indianapolis.
'Hopeless romantic'
Mr Kassig told Time magazine that he visited Beirut during one of his holidays to learn more about the Syrian crisis.
He later returned to Lebanon to volunteer at refugee camps, eventually setting up his own aid group, Special Emergency Response and Assistance (Sera).
He told CNN in a 2012 interview: ""The way I saw it, I didn't have a choice. This is what I was put here to do. I guess I am just a hopeless romantic, and I am an idealist, and I believe in hopeless causes."
