Academic qualifications are commonly felt to give a person the best chance of success in life. How far is this true?

I don't think this is true, I am not academic and Ive done well for myself.

My grandpa never went to college and neither did my uncle and they both own big houses and nice cars. There is lots of jobs out there that pay extremely well without needing a degree.

If you can put the time in, it's a good idea to do so. Qualifications generally give you more chance of securing a good job.

With the economy the way it is right now, you can have all the academic qualifications and still not find a job. Just look at the number of unemployed people and the companies laying off workers. My friend just graduated college in hopes of becoming a teacher. He cannot find an open position so he's now working part-time for UPS.

I have a similar problem myself. I have my degrees, I just need to find a school willing to take on my internship.
