I didn't see this coming. From what was described, it was clearly an accident. I didn't think they'd be charging him with manslaughter.

More than a year after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot by Alec Baldwin on the “Rust” movie set, prosecutors announced they will charge the actor and the film’s armorer with involuntary manslaughter, accusing the pair of failing to perform essential firearm safety duties that could have prevented the tragic accident.

Hutchins was killed on the film’s New Mexico set in October 2021 when a prop gun Baldwin was holding fired a live round of ammunition, striking Hutchins in the chest and hitting director Joel Souza in the shoulder.

Baldwin has maintained that he never pulled the trigger and was not aware the gun contained live rounds. Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the set armorer who loaded the prop gun, says she believed the rounds were dummy ammunition, according to her lawyer.

Prosecutors, however, say both Baldwin and Gutierrez Reed were responsible for checking the safety of the prop.

“Every person that handles a gun has a duty to make sure that if they’re going to handle that gun, point it at someone and pull the trigger, that it is not going to fire a projectile and kill someone,” New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told CNN Thursday.

Have not been following this much, but I have heard him quoted as 'swearing' that he did not pull the trigger. That's a bit hard to buy, and hurts his credibility...IMO. I can believe that maybe in the heat of the moment he does not remember pulling the trigger.
I think that whoever put the live bullet in the gun was more than a bit "off course".
Why in the hell don't they use a replica of a gun in a case like this anyhow?

It's a tragedy all around, but it feels excessive to bring charges like this. Responsibility lies with whoever put that live round in there. It should have been blanks, like it always is.

In some of the newer films they use CGI guns like they did in Terminator Genesys.

Arnold's shotgun prop that he used at the beginning of the movie was just a green gun made out of foam and tape.

I really think all movies should follow this example in order to cut down on these incidents. Brandon Lee being killed on set was bad enough. You'd figure that they would have learned from his death 30 years ago.

Absolutely agreed, we're well into the stage where this is a possibility, so CGI should be the norm.

I figure no matter how the court case falls, his career in Hollywood is essentially over. I doubt anyone is going to want to even consider touching him with a ten foot pole much less actually do so.

By the way, he is being charged with involuntary manslaughter not manslaughter (yes there is a difference here). They are basically tying the mishandling of the fire arm to their deaths and putting the blame on both the armorer and the actor onthem for not handling things the right way. It's a reasonable conclusion to make so I can see why they are going to court over it.

Do you think he'll be serving time or do you think his lawyer will keep him out of prison?

With the money he has, I'm thinking he had to have bought a really good one from a respectable law firm.

I certainly "assume" that he will get no more than a "slap on the wrist"....at least I hope so. I really don't have an opinion about him or his personal character, but from what we know I think it was totally unfair for him to have been charged in the first place. He had every reason to think the gun was a complete harmless "dummy" replica.
But @Bluezone777 is no doubt correct......it's time for him to put his retirement plans in place.

Well, he was let loose in the end.

Oh this is good news. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm glad they did drop the charges. I hope they don't try to throw the book at him on anything else. I found this:

While Gutierrez-Reed battles in court, the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin were dropped.

Special prosecutors announced the decision in April as "new facts" had been revealed that required further investigation. In their motion to dismiss, the special prosecutors noted that the further investigation and forensic analysis required couldn't be completed before Baldwin's preliminary hearing, which was scheduled for May 3.

The case has been closed in the First Judicial District Court of New Mexico, but Baldwin could potentially still face new charges in the future.

I remember the Brandon Lee incident, that was terrible.

Why were there real bullets being used on a film set though? Did they ever find out why?

Also do we know whether or not the bullet was placed intentionally?

Apparently it was one that fires differently.
