LONDON (AFP) – Aliens may exist but mankind should avoid contact with them as the consequences could be devastating, British scientist Stephen Hawking warned Sunday.

If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn't turn out well for the Native Americans, said the astrophysicist in a new television series, according to British media reports.

The programmes depict an imagined universe featuring alien life forms in huge spaceships on the hunt for resources after draining their own planet dry.

Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach, warned Hawking.

I remember reading this last night. Made me wonder what he might have been smoking.

That's a good one Sci!

That's kind of expectant when you put it that way.

Why did he change to aliens all of a sudden? I was just starting to get into his Membrane. theory before this. That's probably one of the theories I've found most interesting in his speculations. I've admired Stephen Hawking so much for these types of subjects and everything he has uncovered through his life time so far.

...Let alone he's my idol, hahaha. *Snort*

Aliens just seems so broad to uncover like how our technology would look like in 100s of years and what we have done with it. Who knows, maybe we get out there first? Maybe they're purposely avoiding contact in general because of these factors? What do they look like? Are they nothing more then single celled organisms? It just keeps coming.

I could easily say aliens would end up looking like pink elephants and still have some background knowledge to back me up, considering we had never bumped into aliens once in human history that we know of. We don't even know if they look exactly like us or their structure is completely different. How could we really know why they came here? This is all coming from a human. Though it's always good to be skeptical, it's still pretty unpredictable unless their thinking structure is exactly like ours.

Completely my opinion of course! Haha.

The doomsday scenario is suggested in the series Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking on the Discovery Channel, which began airing in the United States on Sunday.

I hadn't seen this yet. I want to though...

It makes sense to think that a civilization may be forced to become nomads and roam the galaxies for resources. Space pirates. But this is still speculation based on very limited knowledge.

I am confused on some of you people's reactions to this article though. It's not like it say aliens actually are coming to raid out planet.
