An employer having you lock up your smartphone

Would you be ok with an employer having you lock up your smartphone for “productivity reasons” during you shift? Why or why not?

I think that it depends on their reasons.

If it is just because they don't trust you to be able to be productive when you have access to it then I would find that a bit insulting. On the other hand I used to work for a company that did data entry for credit card applications and we were not allowed phones for security and privacy reasons and I was absolutely fine with that.

They do that at places like Wal-Mart. Being on your cell is an automatic termination.

Yeah, it's a no-brainer really unless you absolutely need to have access to it in case of emergencies, in which case employers generally show a bit of leeway so long as it's short-term..

I leave it at home if that is the case, I mean you should not have or use your phone at work anyway unless it's work-related.

Part of my job involves cybersecurity and we have to deal with emanations security and pii, so we’re banned from bringing our phones into the facility.

There some companies where you work here, it's part of their workers agreement, so if you agree to it, there is nothing to complain about it. Most hotels here do it with their staff.

Depends on the job, if your someone who needs to be stocking something or making sure a task gets done, you don't need it. Since I have to provide support for people I do need my phone on me at all times.

It's not something I would be happy with but I wouldn't leave a job because of it. I think the biggest problem is that it tends to affect some people a lot more than others. If you're a parent, for example, you're going to need your phone on you just in case the school calls you.

It really should be a case of being able to keep a phone on you but you're not allowed to use it at all unless it's a genuine emergency.

Some people can leave their phones alone during work and have no problems. Other people seem unable to tear themselves away from their phones. It depends on the person.

This use to be the case at my work. If you were on company time with your cell phone on you, it was an automatic termination. Now, everyone walks around with their phones on them.

They don't just wake up one day and decide to lock up workers smartphone. It's something that's always agreed upon before being hired. If you're not okay with it, look for another job.

I experienced this before, but I did not comply. Why would he do that? Most transcactions are through using the mobile phone.
