Eric Schmidt says Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming in October or November.

In an interview with Marc Banioff at Salesforce.com’s conference, Dreamforce, in San Francisco, Eric Schmidt, Google's executive chairman, confirmed rumours of an Autumn release of their new Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich. Schmidt casually dropped the comment in as part of an answer to a different question about HTMLl 5, sparking excitement among Android fans.

Schmidt said: We have a new operating system, internally known as Ice Cream Sandwich for some reason, which is being released in October or November, which everyone's really excited about.

Ice Cream Sandwich is reported to provide one unifying operating system for all Android devices, upgrading their existing Honeycomb system to cover both Smartphones and tablets.

The system was previewed at a Google conference in May, demonstrating such features as a video conferencing app with the ability to automatically detect and zoom in on whoever is speaking. It will probably debut in the hotly anticipated Nexus Prime expected in time for the Christmas season around the same time as the iPhone 5.

Schmidt also spoke about Google's recent acquisition of Motorola, hinting at a possible move into integrated hardware: …we did it for more than just the patents, we actually believe that the Motorola team has some amazing products coming, products that we’ve worked with so far are really quite good…it’s a great organisation…having at least one area where we can do software integrated hardware and learn from that probably produces better products.
