To answer the question, I am not really a fan to be honest. Nothing else on the page is moving so by comparison an animated avatar is very distracting.

This may sound strange coming from a graphics guy,but most of them annoy the heck out of me.
It is the same with some fricking banners you see around.

I don't mind animated avatars or even sigs of a reasonable size much as it's when you abuse them is when they become annoying and when you grow tired of seeing them. Sometimes they can even be funny every now and then depending on what one you are referring to. I noticed at least with self hosted boards that they don't allow them and it usually means I go without one because of it as I just don't have many decent non moving avatars that I like.

We don't have restrictions, you should upload one and we'll see if its tasteful or not.
I'm sure it cant be worse than that toilet licking avatar someone had.

Depends what they are. On my old forum I had someone who'd got an animation of someone blowing they're brains out. I asked them to remove it and they did without any problems.

I don't think those kind of animations are appropriate on any forum, but in general they don't bother me. Unless it's a fast image flash which I can't look at.
