Are boarding schools good for kids?

A young child sent away from home to live with strangers doesn't sound ideal to me. They lose their access to love and support from family members and their home. Prolonged separation from these things can't be good for their mental health.
An older teenager might be able to handle it better. They might learn some structure and discipline, gain some independance and stuff like that. However sending them away for too long might backfire (like what I mentioned above).
