Area Code Tattoos

Why do people get their area code tattooed on themselves? Ive seen several people here with the local area code tattooed on them. Would you do that?

Californian gangs often receive a tattoo of their neighborhood area code. Mexican Mafia gang members might have the number 13 to indicate membership, while British gang members may have a Borstal mark, a dot between the thumb and forefinger, indicating time spent incarcerated as youth.

My father has various Borstal marks on his hands from when he was in his teens, he told me he got them done with a group of friends along with a devil on his arm. I really do not mind them but the tear drop tattoo seems weird imo.

Never heard or seen area code tattoos, I have however seen a couple of people tattoo bar codes on them though. (Friend I use to talk to a lot in fact)
