I logged onto this forum I moderate to see that it had about 11,000 of the 60,000 posts deleted..

So I looked in the Mod logs and an ex-admin deleted them all. They have a group on there that gives ex-admins and ex-mods deleting powers, and she used those to delete a good 10,000 posts.

I believe someone banned her before she got to the rest..

This wouldn't be so bad if this wasn't on a free forum. We can't make our own back-ups, so we're currently waiting for the host to restore it..

If they can...

So hope they can D:

That's such a shame!

It's horrid when mods go rogue.

I've been on another site for 5 years and every so often people will pull up their very first posts.

It's fun to see what you talked about, way back when...

It's also interesting to see old names of folks who don't visit that site any more.

My first posts on that site were jokes and Smooth was one of the first people to welcome me to the forum.

Some hosts do regular back ups so unless you're dealing with really cheap people, you'll get a good amount of those posts back. Depending on when back ups are done though, you will probably lose a couple day's content.

They're restoring it now.

We're losing about six days of posts. Better than 11,000 though, lol

I personally don't see the logic in having ex staff with moderation powers. The whole point of not being staff anymore is having those powers removed when you retire. Nice to hear you are getting most of it back as it's terrible when anyone abuses their power to take down a board like that.

Is it a free hosted forum? Couldnt the admin just restore a recent backup to get those posts back?

what a complete douchebag.... that is why i ONLY EVER hire staff i personally know.

I don't either; I had suggested multiple times to remove their powers..

And she actually didn't resign/quit, she was demoted for power abuse. Oh, what wonderful people who run that forum..

It's a free forum, so we can't create our own backups. We're still waiting for the host to restore it...

What a shame this happened but it could easily have been avoided by removing her access to the admin control panel. Can't understand why the site owner allows ex-mods and ex-admin to retain moderating ability.

Hope it all gets sorted out soon!

I don't understand the logic of ex staff with moderation powers either, its basically a free door for somebody disgruntled poster to cause mayhem!

By the way, back in January, I did something similar - wiping off about 11k posts myself - and over 150 new member registrations, and it takes a long, long time to recover (8 months later, I still don't think Vanity Edge has recovered fully)

She just had deleting and locking powers I think, but it was enough to wipe out 11k posts..

They restored the forum, though. We just lost a weeks worth of posts, and a lot of us saved ones that she didn't delete.

Could have been worse and I hope the site learned a lesson from this.

Now what did you learn from this?

Well I already was against ex-staff having mod powers XD

They learned from it, though, lol, they're removing all ex-staff mod powers.

Good lord, sounds like it was an accident waiting to happen. Worst we've ever had is someone deleting about 40 threads at once, but I was online at the time and banned the heck out of them pretty darn fast. Thankfully, mods don't have permanent delete privileges on my forums.

That was a big security hole they left open. How did they justify it, especially when she was demoted for power abuse? Glad you guys learned your lesson at the low cost of six days worth of your lives.

Ive given a few retired staff members viewing/posting access to the staff forums in the past but their powers were removed. I would not make sense for someone who is supposed to be retired to have staff powers or use them around the forum. It would be confusing to the members I would think.

That would make sense. Giving ex-staff permission to still be in the staff forum. Then that way, say if you're making any plans for a revamp or whatever, they can still have a say in what they want done or something like that.

That was the reason for the group, anyways.

All they can do now is see staff sections.
