Hong Kong celebrated the arrival of the new year with a firework show involving 11 buildings on the city's waterfront.
More than 400,000 spectators at Victoria Harbour watched a four-minute choreographed show, featuring meteor showers for revellers to make wishes for an auspicious new year.
Meanwhile in Taiwan tens of thousands of people gathered in front of the world's second tallest building to welcome 2012.
The landmark Taipei 101 building provided the backdrop for a firework show, followed by an evening of concerts and performances.
In Beijing thousands of people also watched the city's first official New Year's Eve countdown.
