Ambassador Tim Torlot had been on his way to the embassy in the Yemeni capital Sana'a.
Sky sources have confirmed that Mr Torlot was the target of the attack.
A Foreign Office spokesman said: There was a small explosion beside the British Ambassador's car.
He was unhurt. No other embassy staff or British nationals were injured.
