In my area they broke for the Summer Holidays on July 21st and go back on Sep 2nd

which is a Friday ! Why on earth they go back on a Friday is beyond me.

Well... it makes sense. Assuming the first day is only used to tell you where you belong (timetables and stuff... maybe a speech?), it gives you two more days to sleep (weekend), allowing you to start properly on a Monday.
