The vietnamese have it even worse, they let the baby duck grow a little bit so its bones start to develop (but they're still soft, I believe). Us Filipinos eat it before the bones start growing in. And yes you can actually tell that it's a duck, my brother opened one up and the duck fell out and you could see the beak, eyes, neck, etc.
